What Is a Hot Toddy?
A hot toddy is a warm cocktail made with whiskey, honey, lemon juice, hot water, and sometimes herbs and spices. It is traditionally sipped on cold days, enjoyed as a nightcap, or simply savored when a warm honey-and-lemon drink sounds especially soothing.
My dad's family were pioneer farmers who traveled west by wagon and eventually settled in Oregon and California during the 1840s. In those days, doctors were scarce, and isolated farming families relied on "doctor books" for advice about illness. Like family Bibles, these books were passed down through generations, and I spent many a rainy day reading our copy of ⓵ "Dr. Gunn's". The section on colds and coughs includes this historical advice:
"… take the following pleasant mixture: 1 table-spoonful or more of good Whiskey, and 1 small tea-spoonful of Butter, Sugar, and Nut-meg. Fill the cup full of boiling Water, stir it up altogether, and drink this as hot as you can, and go, after bathing your feet and legs, to bed…"
This old passage shows how long people have turned to hot alcoholic drinks for comfort when they felt under the weather. A hot toddy is not a cure, but it is warm and comforting like an old friend.
Why You'll Love This Hot Toddy
This hot toddy can be customized in a variety of ways to make it perfect for your taste:
- Balance the Sweetness and Tartness. Add more honey for sweetness or more lemon juice for a brighter, tarter drink.
- Adjust the Strength. Add more hot water for a milder drink or slightly less for a more whiskey-forward toddy.
- Substitute Your Favorite Spirit. Consider using brandy, rum, tequila, or gin instead of whiskey.
Ingredient Notes

Here's what you need to make a Classic Hot Toddy:
- Whiskey - Use a whiskey you have on hand. Bourbon is a classic choice, but I like Crown Royal because it is smooth and not terribly expensive. See the section below for substitution options.
- Honey - Use any honey you have on hand. Great choices are clover honey and orange blossom honey.
- Lemon Juice - Fresh lemon is always best.
- Boiling Water - Use freshly boiled water to dissolve the honey and keep the drink pleasantly hot.
Substitutions & Variations

- Use Scotch Whisky. Some Scotch whiskies have a smoky or peaty flavor that can be especially warming in a hot toddy. You may want to add a little more honey to balance the stronger flavor.
- Use Brandy. Brandy is a spirit made from grapes that has a fruity flavor and may be slightly sweet. Brandy was a favorite spirit in my family for Hot Toddies and also for Tom & Jerry.
- Use Spiced Rum. Spiced rums have the flavors of sweet baking spices with vanilla and sometimes a hint of citrus. The flavor of a good spiced rum is delicious in this drink and is my second favorite next to a Canadian Whisky like Crown Royal.
- Use Other Spirits. Although uncommon to use in a hot toddy, you can also make an excellent hot toddy with gin, vodka, or tequila.
How to Make a Classic Hot Toddy
♡ So, let's cook!

- Step 1 - Add Ingredients. Add the whiskey, honey, and lemon juice to a large mug.

- Step 2 - Add Water. Add one-half of the boiling water and stir well.

- Step 3 - Add More Water & Garnish. Stir in the remaining boiling water. Garnish with a lemon slice, whole cloves, or a cinnamon stick, if desired.
Let the toddy cool slightly before taking the first sip.
My Top Tip
♡ The most important thing is to use a spirit you like. Although bourbon is a classic choice for a hot toddy, you can make yours with another spirit.

When there is a chill in the air, there is nothing like a hot toddy to make you feel warm and cozy and put a smile on your face.
