What Is Sweet Cream Cold Foam?

Sweet cream cold foam is a lightly whipped mixture of heavy cream, whole milk, and vanilla syrup. Unlike whipped cream, it remains pourable, allowing it to float gently over iced coffee, sodas, teas, and other cold beverages.

    Why Does Cold Foam Float?

Cold foam floats because tiny air bubbles become trapped in the cream while the higher fat content helps stabilize the foam. The result is a light topping that rests on the surface of your drink instead of mixing in immediately.

Ingredient Notes for Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam

Here's everything you'll need to make Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam. Please see the recipe card for the exact quantities.

The ingredients, clockwise from top: whole milk, heavy cream, and vanilla syrup.
    • Heavy Cream - Heavy cream creates the rich texture that allows the foam to float beautifully on top of cold beverages.
    • Whole Milk - Whole milk makes the cold foam pourable and prevents it from being too stiff.
    • Vanilla Syrup - Vanilla syrup sweetens the cold foam while adding rich vanilla flavor. Vanilla syrup is available in the coffee aisle of many supermarkets and online. If you prefer, you can make it yourself following my recipe for Vanilla Simple Syrup.

How to Make Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam

    ♡ So, let's make some!

Process Photo 1a - All of the ingredients are poured into a tall glass.
Process Photo 1b - The ingredients are whipped with a milk frother and have doubled in size.
    1. Step 1: Froth Ingredients. Add all ingredients into a tall cup or bowl. Use a milk frother for 20 to 30 seconds to whip the mixture until it has doubled and is frothy. The mixture should be airy, pourable, and slightly thickened, and not as stiff as whipped cream.
Process Photo 2a - Stir the cold foam to make sure the texture is thickened and frothy.
Process Photo 2b - The cold foam is poured over the back of a spoon, so it gently floats on top of an iced beverage.
    1. Step 2: Stir & Pour. Stir with a spoon to check that the texture is frothy and slightly thickened. Pour the cold foam over your favorite iced beverage. Pouring over the back of a spoon helps the foam float on top for a beautiful layered presentation. Serve & Enjoy!

    My Top Tip

♡ To make a frothy, pourable mixture, do not froth the mixture for more than 30 seconds.

    Equipment

Cold foam equipment, clockwise from top left: mason jar, hand mixer, whisk, and a milk frother.

A handheld milk frother is the easiest way to make vanilla sweet cream cold foam because it creates a light, airy foam in just seconds.

For the greatest control, whisk the mixture by hand or shake it in a mason jar with a lid. Both methods make it easy to stop mixing before the cold foam becomes too thick.

A hand mixer set on low also works well, especially for the larger batch this recipe makes. Be careful not to mix for too long when using a hand mixer or milk frother, or the mixture may become too thick and lose its pourable texture.

Beverages to Try with a Cold Foam

Vanilla sweet cream cold foam adds a rich, creamy finish to many cold beverages. For the best texture, serve it over well-chilled drinks with plenty of ice so the foam stays light and floats beautifully on top.

    Coffee Drinks

    • Cold Brew
    • Iced Coffee
    • Iced Latte

    Dirty Sodas

    Lemonades

    Iced Teas

    Mocktails

    Fruit Punch

Cold foam also pairs well with sparkling water, flavored sodas, and fruit-based drinks, making it an easy way to dress up everyday beverages.

Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam FAQs

Can I make Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam ahead of time?

Cold Foams take just 5 minutes to make and are best when made just before serving.

    Can I use half-and-half instead?

Half-and-half can be used, but the foam won't be quite as thick or stable because it contains less fat than heavy cream.

Can I use homemade vanilla syrup?

Yes! Homemade vanilla syrup works beautifully and lets you control both the sweetness and the vanilla flavor. Just follow the directions on my Simple Syrup Recipes Chart.

    Make-Ahead & Storage Instructions

    • Make-Ahead: This cold foam is best when made just before serving.
    • Refrigeration: Store leftovers in an airtight container. Whip with a frother or whisk for a few seconds before serving.
    • Freezing: Do not freeze. Because cold foam contains dairy, it will not freeze well.
