Watermelon Water is a cool, refreshing, low-calorie, fruit drink that contains watermelon, cold water, lime juice, a little sugar, and salt.

This Watermelon Water is a version of the popular agua fresca served in Mexican restaurants and south of the border. "Agua fresca" translates to "fresh water" and is typically a fresh fruit, like melon, pureed with water, citrus juice, and sugar.

Why You’ll Love This Watermelon Water Recipe

    • Simple Ingredients: The 4 ingredients are easily found at your local grocery store. Just add water!
    • Easy to Make: Whether you purchase a whole watermelon or already cut watermelon you can make this
    • The Flavor is Adjustable: You can easily add a little more sugar to make it sweeter or a little more lime juice to perk up the flavor.
    • Family Friendly: This Watermelon Water contains no alcohol and is low in added sugar, so it's perfect for both kids and adults.

    So, let's cook!

    Ingredients Notes

The Ingredients from top to bottom: cubes of fresh watermelon, salt, fresh lime juice, and superfine sugar.

    Here's what you need:

    • Fresh Watermelon - You can purchase a watermelon and cut it yourself or buy one that is cut for you. You will need approximately 7 pounds with the rind on and approximately 5.3 pounds without the rind. Always refrigerate watermelon after it is cut.
    • Salt - Just a small amount of salt, brings out the flavor of watermelon and makes it taste sweeter.
    • Fresh Lime Juice - I love a little acidity when making this aqua fresca and lime pairs beautifully with watermelon.
    • Superfine Sugar - Also called "extra fine", this sugar quickly dissolves when making beverages.
    • Cold Water - (not shown) Using cold water and cold watermelon, means you can serve this refreshing beverage immediately after making it.

Please see the recipe card for the exact quantities.

    How to Make Watermelon Water

Process Photo 1 - All of the ingredients are placed in a large blender.
Process Photo 2 - All of the ingredients are blended together in a large blender carafe.

Add. Add the cubes of watermelon, water, lime juice, sugar, and salt to a large-capacity high-speed blender.

Blend. Blend at low speed for 20 seconds. Then gradually increase speed to high and blend for another 30 to 40 seconds.

Serve and Enjoy. Pour into glasses, garnish as desired, and enjoy!

    My Top Tip

♡ Make sure both the watermelon and the water are cold, so you can serve this refreshing beverage immediately after blending.

    Substitutions & Variations

    • Substitute Agave Nectar or Honey. Instead of superfine sugar you can use agave nectar or honey to sweeten this drink.
    • Add More Sugar. If you like your Watermelon Water a little sweeter, you can add more sugar. But don't add more than ½ cup to avoid the sugar not dissolving and creating a "sugar sludge" at the bottom of the drink.
    • Substitute Monkfruit. To sweeten this water use monkfruit instead of sugar for a no sugar added beverage.
    • Add Strawberries. Strawberries and watermelon go very well together. Try adding 1 cup of sliced strawberries for every 3 cups of cubed watermelon.

    Equipment

I use a Vitamix Blender, which is a high-speed blender that holds a large volume. It easily breaks down and blends the ingredients of watermelon water into a smooth liquid.

If your blender is smaller, you can blend small batches of the watermelon water ingredients and combine them in a large pitcher.

    Make-Ahead & Storage

    • Make-Ahead: This Watermelon Water is best made the same day it is served, but it can be made a few hours ahead of time. Please note this fresh drink is perishable after 2 days.
    • Refrigeration: You can keep this agua fresca in the refrigerator for up to two days, and it will still taste fresh. After day 2, discard any leftovers.
