What Is Sangria?
Sangria is a wine punch that originated in Spain and Portugal. It is traditionally a red wine fortified with brandy or other spirits and sweetened with sugar and fruit juices. Sliced fruit that complements the flavor of the wine is typically steeped in the wine punch for several hours and up to overnight. The sangria is then served over ice with some of this fruit.
Why This Recipe Works
Like all sangria recipes, this rosé sangria recipe contains a liqueur base and fresh fruit to echo the flavors of the wine.
- Rosé wine is typically light and fruity with the flavors of strawberry, grapefruit, melon, raspberry, cherry, and sometimes fresh white flowers. It is typically dry with a sweetness between Sauvignon Blanc and Moscato.
- Making a liqueur base that contains flavors that emphasize or complement the wine is key to making a delicious sangria. This recipe has a base of orange and peach liqueurs, plus lemon juice that goes very well with rosé wine.
- We double down with more fruit flavor by adding slices of an orange, a sliced lemon, and halved strawberries to the liqueur base.
There is nothing like a sweet and fruity drink to refresh you and lift your spirits and this sangria has fruit throughout the drink!
So, let's cook!
Ingredient Notes
Here's what you need to make a Refreshing Pink Rosé Sangria:
- Cointreau - Cointreau is an orange-flavored liqueur similar to Triple Sec and my favorite orange liqueur for cocktails.
- Peach Schnapps - Peach schnapps make the flavor of this sangria uniquely delicious. One sip of this sangria with peach schnapps will have you asking, "why is this so good?".
- Fresh Lemon Juice - You will need some tart lemon juice to balance the sweetness of the liqueurs and rich simple syrup.
- Rich Simple Syrup - Similar to "heavy simple syrup", rich simple syrup will sweeten the sangria without diluting the fruity flavors.
- Orange - You will need a fresh orange to add to the sangria, to signal its flavor is in the beverage. I prefer to cut half of a smaller orange into half wheels.
- Lemon - A lemon cut in wheels looks very pretty and also signals flavor.
- Strawberries - Strawberries go very well with rosé wine and look amazing. I hull and halve them, but you could use hulled whole berries if they are small. Fresh berries are always best, but you can use thawed frozen berries.
- Rosé Wine - Choose a rosé wine you like, but don't bother with buying an expensive wine. You will find plenty of choices that are $12 or less.
Optional Garnish:
- Fresh Mint

Step-by-Step Instructions
Mix Liqueur Base. To a large pitcher add the Cointreau, peach schnapps, lemon juice, and rich simple syrup and stir well.
Add Fruit. Add the sliced orange, lemon, and strawberries and let them sit for 30 minutes.
Stir in Rosé Wine. Stir in the rosé wine and refrigerate for up to 3 hours.
Serve and Enjoy. Stir well and pour the rosé sangria into glasses filled with ice and garnish with some of the fruit and sprigs of fresh mint. Serve and Enjoy!
How to Make Rich Simple Syrup
In a small saucepan bring to a boil, ½ cup of water and 1 cup of sugar. Simmer for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Remove from heat and let cool. Store the syrup, covered, in the refrigerator.
My Top Tip
♡ An inexpensive rosé wine can work well in this recipe. Save the expensive stuff for sipping solo with a nice cheese plate.
Substitutions & Variations
- Substitute White Zinfandel Wine. You can use white zinfandel instead of a rosé wine. Because white zin is sweeter, you will need to reduce the amount of rich simple syrup to offset the sweetness of white zin. If you like very sweet sangria you are good to go without any changes.
- Substitute Frozen Strawberries. You can substitute thawed frozen strawberries.
- Substitute Other Fruit. If strawberries are not available you can substitute raspberries, peaches, or nectarines.
- Substitute Triple Sec. Cointreau is delicious, but it is pricey. You can substitute a good-quality Triple Sec for it.
- Substitute Grand Marnier. If you have Grand Marnier on hand you can substitute it for the Cointreau.
Make-Ahead & Storage
- Make Ahead. It would be best if you made this Rosé Sangria at least 4 hours in advance of serving it for the flavors to develop and you can make it the day before.
- Storage. Store the sangria in a covered pitcher in the refrigerator. Some pitchers have a lid, if yours does not simply cover the top with plastic wrap. This drink is meant to be consumed within 24 hours and does not store well after 48 hours.
